Research and education.
Virtually no other region has such a long history of pursuing scientific knowledge as Rhine-Neckar. The Ruperto-Carola University of Heidelberg is the oldest university in Germany: it was founded in 1386. Today, more than 85,000 students are enrolled at the 22 universities in the region. National and international rankings continue to confirm the excellence of its academic institutions, especially in the life sciences, natural sciences, humanities, law, social sciences, and economics disciplines.
In addition to the universities in Germersheim (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz), Heidelberg, Landau (University of Koblenz-Landau), Mannheim, and Speyer, several other universities in many cities across the region cover key disciplines, in most cases including economics. In Baden-Wuerttemberg we also have the Cooperative State University, which combines industrial and scientific training and has become an international role model.
